Free WiFi Wireless Internet returns to the World Exchange Plaza in Ottawa

June 14, 2004,

BelNet Communications and AirRoamer Inc. are pleased to announce the return to free Wireless Internet Access at the World Exchange Plaza in Ottawa. "Usage on the pay per use system was extremely low and not serving the objective of attracting Wireless Internet users to the World Exchange Plaza,” said Gord Gifford, Director of Business Development at BelNet Communications. The AirRoamer Courtesy Access service enables wireless internet users to connect for free. They just have to enter their cellular phone number to confirm their identity. This feature is necessary to protect the World Exchange Plaza from internet abuse, which is on the rise. More and more people are looking for wide open wireless internet connections to maintain their anonymity when they download illicit material, generate spam, hack into other systems, steal movies and music, etc. "With AirRoamer, there are no restrictions on what you can do while you are connected to the internet but if someone does abuse the internet access, we have the records necessary to block them from connecting again...or...if the abuse is criminal in nature, we can assist investigative authorities to ascertain who they are" said John Campbell, Vice President - Marketing at AirRoamer Inc.

"The AirRoamer Courtesy Access Service is exactly what the World Exchange Plaza needed" said Mr. Gifford adding that "the reason we installed WiFi in the first place was to demonstrate the flexibility of wireless networks and build an atmosphere conducive to business". Mr. Gifford sees a growing trend in wireless internet where WiFi connectivity is being offered as an amenity like a courtesy phone or public washroom. ”More and more businesses are calling us asking about deploying free public access for their clientele”. Free WiFi seems is gaining momentum while the pay per use model is facing a number of challenges. Last month, Cometa Networks (a joint venture between Intel, IBM and AT&T) shut down operations after failing to secure enough locations to create a pay per use WiFi network in the USA.

In Canada, BelNet Communications maintains a leadership position in Wireless Internet; investing heavily in the technical skills and the resources necessary to integrate, deploy, secure and provision large wireless networks. "Not only is BelNet capable of installing WiFi networks anywhere in Canada, but they really understand how wireless internet is changing the way people work and live" said Tyler Cashion, Vice President - Business Development at AirRoamer Inc. adding that "this is why their implementations are so successful....they really understand what customers need".

BelNet Communications designs, Integrates and maintains wired and secure wireless networks. Courtesy Access from AirRoamer Inc. is available from BelNet Communications and can be integrated into multiple solutions.
